SUMMARY:NHSO Free Family Concert: The Year of the Dragon
DESCRIPTION:The New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s (NHSO) popular Family Series returns in February with a statewide tour of concerts for kids celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year\, which in 2024 is the “Year of the Dragon.” These concerts\, presented free of charge\, are programmed specifically for children ages 3-7\, encouraging listening\, playfulness\, and participation throughout the interactive performance. \nOn this 50-minute program\, international erhu virtuoso Dr. Chia-Yu Joy Lu of Wesleyan University will play alongside a NHSO violinist Stephanie Hug and NHSO pianist William Braun. The erhu is a two-stringed instrument played with a bow that is not only popular in China\, but in East Asian countries that are influenced by Chinese culture. The concert’s music will include Two Tigers\, Thunder in a Drought\, Joy & Happiness\, Grasshopper Tricks the Rooster\, Beautiful Flowers and Full Moon\, and more. She has published a music textbook (Music Textbook for Vocational High School\, 2006\, Kuang Mau Books Co.\, LTD)\, erhu music scores\, and erhu music albums that have been distributed in Taiwan and China. She has appeared in Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, Yale University\, and Boston College\, and has been directing Wesleyan Chinese Music Ensemble for over a decade. Entries are now being accepted for the 2024 Connecticut Junior Migratory Bird Conservation (Duck) Stamp Art Competition\, part of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) environmental education program administered since 1987 by the Connecticut Waterfowl Association (CWA). \nPhoto Credit: Justin Hyun\, grade 7\, took first place in the 7th-9th grade age group with a painting of a wood duck. \nThere is no cost\, and submissions are due by March 15\, 2024. \nThis contest is open to all students\, kindergarten through grade 12\, who are Connecticut residents. To enter\, students create and submit a drawing or painting featuring native waterfowl (ducks or geese) — List of Eligible Species. \nAs part of a concerted effort to encourage more young people to explore the natural world and increase conservation awareness\, the Connecticut Junior Migratory Bird Conservation Stamp “Best in Show” winner will be featured as the 2025 Connecticut Migratory Bird Conservation Stamp! The “Best in Show” winner will also be an entry for the Federal Junior Stamp Contest. \nTo enter\, students create and submit a drawing or painting featuring native waterfowl (ducks or geese). There is no cost\, and submissions must be postmarked by March 15\, 2024. \nThis competition is intended to encourage more young people to explore the natural world and increase conservation awareness. DESCRIPTION:The Annual Community Carol Sing will be held on Sunday\, December 17\, 2023. Mystic Seaport visitors will be admitted Free of charge on this day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm with a non-perishable food item. As in the past\, donations of non-perishable food will be collected as well as monetary donations and are to be accepted at the North Gate and the South Gate. The donated food and contributions will be given to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. \nThe Mystic Seaport Carolers will perform a holiday concert in the Greenmanville Church at 2 p.m. The Carol Sing will commence on the deck of the Thompson Exhibition Building and McGraw Quadrangle at 3 p.m. led by Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the University of Connecticut\, Jamie Spillane\, and backed by The Mystic Seaport Museum Carolers\, and a brass quartet. \nVisitors should meet on the quad just before 3:00pm. SUMMARY:Annual Holiday Open House at the Governor's Residence
DESCRIPTION:Governor Ned Lamont and First Lady Annie Lamont are inviting Connecticut residents to attend the Annual Holiday Open House at the Governor’s Residence\, which will be decorated for the season and open to the public for tours. \nThe open house will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday\, December 8\, 2023\, and Saturday\, December 9\, 2023. It is located at 990 Prospect Avenue in Hartford. There is no admittance fee and tickets are not needed\, however monetary donations will be accepted on behalf of Operation E.L.F.\, an annual fundraising campaign of the Connecticut National Guard Foundation. \n \nLive music entertainment will be provided on both days. On Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.\, that entertainment will be provided by vocal performers from VP Vocal Studio\, led by vocal coach Vanessa Pare. On Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.\, singers from Conard High School’s Be S#arp acapella group will perform. \nAll of the decorations at the Governor’s Residence\, including Christmas trees\, wreaths\, and seasonal greenery\, are donated at no cost to the state. This year\, those generous donations come from the Connecticut Greenhouse Growers Association\, the Nurserymen Association\, Jones Family Farms\, Kathryn Hunt Studios of West Hartford\, and students from Lyman Hall Future Farmers of America.

SUMMARY:All Aboard The Snow Clipper at the Danbury Railway Museum
DESCRIPTION:Santa is coming from the North Pole will once again pay a visit to the Danbury Railway Museum and you can take a short ride in a vintage train through the historic railyard to visit him.  This is a major fund-raising event for the museum and will take place on Saturdays and Sundays\, December 2-3\, 9-10\, 16-17 and 23. The museum will be open each day from noon to 7 p.m.  Reservations are required for this very popular event as it sold out last year.  Due to the unique nature of this event\, walk-in sales will not be available. \nTrains will depart at 12:30 p.m.\, 2 p.m.\, 3:30 p.m.\, 5 p.m.\, 6:30 p.m.  The 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. trains will run in darkness which will be ideal for enjoying the lighted railyard. \nAfterwards\, you are free to enjoy a walk through the railyard with a free cup of hot chocolate\, don’t forget the marshmallows\, and fresh-baked cookie!  Tickets are $25 for ages 2 and up. \nWhen guests arrive and check-in at the restored 1903 train station\, kids and parents will be able to enjoy the festively decorated museum interior. This includes a Letters to Santa coloring station (be sure to include your mailing address\, as Santa does write back!)\, operating model railroads\, and many interesting exhibits and artifact displays. \nAfter a very short train ride in a restored 1953 Budd Rail Diesel Car through the historic Danbury railyard\, you’ll be escorted back to the station for a no-rush meet and greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus\, where the big man himself will give out the first gifts of Christmas.  Returning due to its popularity: parents will bring a pre-wrapped present (or select one from our online menu (includes free gift wrapping and batteries\, see web site for details)\, and Old St. Nick will give your little ones their unique present!
